Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Orange Grove

Orange Grove is home to an important military facility called the Naval Auxiliary Landing Field (ALF). This field helps out a bigger base, NAS Kingsville, which is a Naval Air Station.

Why the Landing Field is Important

When the Naval Air Station Chase Field closed, more pilot training moved to NAS Kingsville. This meant more planes, like the T-45 trainer aircraft, were flying there. To help with the extra air traffic, the Navy invested a lot of money to improve the Orange Grove ALF. It's like a backup runway, about 5 miles southwest of town, that helps spread out the planes.

Wildlife at the Landing Field

The NALF Orange Grove and nearby Escondido Ranch are places where people can go hunting and fishing, following special rules. Interestingly, NAS Kingsville and NALF Orange Grove are also helping out a special type of bird: the burrowing owl.

These owls like to live in burrows in the ground. The Naval Air Station in Kingsville, working with other groups, has created open fields with artificial burrows for these owls. The owls are expected to stay there during the winter, starting in October. NALF Orange Grove also has 18 artificial burrows for the owls. These burrows are set up in groups, about 100 yards apart, giving the owls plenty of space.
