The Story of Orange Julius
How it Started
The Orange Julius drink began at an orange juice stand. This stand was opened in Los Angeles, California, in 1926. The owner was a man named Julius Freed.
At first, the stand did not sell many drinks. Sales were quite low, about $20 each day. This amount was worth much more back then.
The Famous Drink is Invented
In 1929, Julius Freed's real estate broker, Bill Hamlin, created something new. He made a special mixture that helped make the orange juice less acidic. This made it easier on his stomach.
Freed's stand started serving this new drink. It had a frothy and creamy texture. After the new drink was introduced, sales at the stand grew a lot. They went up to $100 a day.
Growing Big
During the 1950s and 1960s, Orange Julius drinks were sold in many places. You could find them at state and county fairs. There were also special Orange Julius stands.
The original stand even offered health tonics and Bible tracts. The Orange Julius drink was chosen as the Official Drink of the 1964 New York World's Fair.
In 1967, Bill Hamlin sold Orange Julius. It was bought by a company called International Industries. This company also owned other well-known restaurants. Orange Julius International grew to have about 745 locations. These were spread from California all the way to Canada.
Becoming Part of Dairy Queen
Orange Julius became a publicly traded company for a while. It had hundreds of stores in malls across the United States and Canada. The first store in Asia opened in Hong Kong in 1977. Later, stores opened in Singapore, South Korea, the Philippines, and Japan.
In 1987, the Orange Julius chain was bought by International Dairy Queen. Later, in 1998, billionaire Warren Buffett bought Dairy Queen. This made Orange Julius a part of his company, Berkshire Hathaway.
Today, most independent Orange Julius stores have become Dairy Queen locations. Dairy Queen also added Orange Julius drinks to its menu. You can now find Orange Julius as a menu item at Dairy Queen stores, often called Treat Centers.
Name and Mascot
Orange Julius first used a devil mascot for its logo in 1926. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Orange Julius stands used a picture of a devil. This devil held a pitchfork and was next to an orange. The slogan was, "A Devilish Good Drink."
The devil image looked a lot like Sparky. Sparky is the mascot for Arizona State University. The company later stopped using this logo and slogan. This happened after the university's alumni association threatened to sue them.
For a short time in the early 1970s, Orange Julius also opened in the UK and the Netherlands. They had a large restaurant in Golders Green in the UK. They also had a small store in Amsterdam, Netherlands. However, Orange Julius left the Dutch market by the mid-1970s.
