The Order of the Spanish Republic (Spanish: "Orden de la República Española") was a special award created in 1932. It was set up in the Second Spanish Republic, which was the government of Spain before the Spanish Civil War.
This award was given to people who showed great merit (meaning they did something really good or helpful) for Spain. It could be for their work as a civilian or for their actions in the military.
The Order of the Spanish Republic took the place of older awards from when Spain was a monarchy (ruled by a king or queen). Instead of a royal crown, its symbol had a mural crown. This type of crown looks like a city wall and was a symbol of a republic, not a king.
The order had different levels, usually five of them. The highest award was a special collar for leaders of countries. There were also two medals linked to this award. The ribbon for the award was red with a white border.
After the Spanish Republic lost the Spanish Civil War, Gen. Francisco Franco took control. He ended all the awards from the Republic and created new ones.
