Ordoño Bermúdez facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ordoño Bermúdez (active 1001–1042) was a son of King Bermudo II of León. He was born outside of marriage. His mother's name is not known. However, she was likely from a noble family in Galicia. This is suggested by an old document from the Monastery of Samos. It shows that his family and the Vela-Ovéquiz family shared an inheritance due to a shared bloodline.

Who Was Ordoño Bermúdez?

Ordoño Bermúdez was an important person in the king's court. He was active there until at least 1032. His name first appears in records in 1001. At that time, he was a witness in a legal disagreement. This dispute involved Count Rodrigo Romániz.

Life in the Royal Court

Ordoño began to approve royal documents in 1024. He served as the mayordomo mayor, or chief steward, for his brother, King Alfonso V of León. After King Alfonso V died in Viseu in 1028, Ordoño continued his role. In 1029, he served as chief steward for his nephew, King Bermudo III.

Family and Descendants

Ordoño married Fronilde Peláez. She was the daughter of Count Pelayo Rodríguez and Gotina Fernández. This marriage started the important Ordóñez family line in medieval Galicia.

In 1042, Ordoño and Fronilde made a gift to the Monastery of Santa María Virgen in León. Their children who were still alive at that time also agreed to the gift. These children were:

  • Bermudo Ordóñez, who married Sancha Ériz.

  • Pelayo Ordóñez, who also passed away before 1042. He was married to Corexia. They had one daughter, Marina Peláez, who became a nun.
  • Sancho Ordóñez, a count who died around 1080. He married Onecca Ovéquiz. They had several children, including Count Oveco and Fronilde Sánchez. Fronilde married Count Nuño Velázquez.
  • Fernando Ordóñez, who died around 1059. He was the husband of Fronilde Gutiérrez.
  • Oveco Ordóñez, who passed away before 1042.
  • Jimena Ordóñez, who died before 1074. She was the first wife of Muño Rodríguez.
