Oreobates ayacucho is a special kind of frog that lives in the Andes mountains of Peru. It belongs to a group of frogs called Strabomantidae. This frog is found only in a few places in the Ayacucho Region of Peru. Scientists have only found 11 of these frogs so far, which makes them quite rare!

What Does the Ayacucho Frog Look Like?

The first female Oreobates ayacucho found was about 29 mm long. Two adult males were smaller, measuring between 19 and 25 mm. This measurement is taken from the tip of their nose to the end of their body.

This frog has a short, rounded nose. It does not have a visible eardrum, but you can see where it would be under its skin. The skin on its back is smooth. It also has small, long bumps and folds on its head and sides.

The frog's fingers and toes have small, knob-shaped tips. They do not have any webbing between them. The frog's back and belly are dark brown. The folds and bumps on its skin are almost black. Its eyes are also very dark, with some golden lines.

How Do Ayacucho Frogs Communicate?

Male Oreobates ayacucho frogs make special calls to attract females. Their call is a group of 3 to 5 short sounds. Each call lasts less than one second. When males are trying hard to find a mate, they repeat these calls about 2 to 3 times every minute.

Where Does the Ayacucho Frog Live?

These frogs live in cold, grassy areas called puna grassland. They are found high up in the mountains, between 3,411 and 3,850 meters above sea level. This means they live in very high places!

Male frogs have been heard calling during the day. These frogs like to hide. They can be found under thick layers of moss near the ground. They also hide within piles of stones.

What Threats Does the Ayacucho Frog Face?

The places where these frogs live are in danger. One big problem is too many cattle eating the grass. This is called overgrazing. Also, new buildings and gas projects are being built in their habitat. People sometimes burn the grass or collect it, which also harms the frogs' homes.
