Orestes Quércia (born August 18, 1938 – died December 24, 2010) was an important Brazilian politician. He served as the 28th governor of São Paulo State, which is a very big and important state in Brazil.
He was born in Pedregulho, São Paulo. Later, his family moved to the city of Campinas. There, he studied journalism and law. He also became an entrepreneur, which means he started and ran his own businesses.
Orestes Quércia was married to Alaíde Barbosa Ulson Quércia. They were married from the 1980s until his death. He passed away at 72 years old after a long illness. He was survived by his wife and four children.

Early Life and Education
Orestes Quércia was the son of Octavio and Isaura Roque Quércia. He grew up in Pedregulho before moving to Campinas as a teenager.
In high school, he was elected the vice-president of the student council. During his last year of high school, he started working as a reporter for a local newspaper called Diário do Povo (Campinas).
He then went to Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas (PUCC) to study law. At university, he was involved in student newspapers. He also helped create the University of Popular Culture, connected to PUCC. From 1959 to 1963, Quércia worked as a radio announcer for two radio stations. He also worked for another newspaper. Later, he became the president of the press association in Campinas.
Political Journey
Orestes Quércia started his political career in 1962. He was elected as an alderman (a local council member) in Campinas. He was part of the Liberator Party (PL).
A few years later, Brazil's political system changed. Quércia joined the MDB party (Brazilian Democratic Movement). With this party, he was elected as a state representative in 1966. Then, in 1968, he became the mayor of Campinas.
After his time as mayor, Quércia worked to build up his party across São Paulo state. In 1974, he was elected as a senator for Brazil. This was a big achievement, as he won a close election against a well-known politician.
In 1982, he was elected as the vice-governor of São Paulo. He worked alongside Governor Franco Montoro. In 1985, he supported the campaign of Tancredo Neves for president. That same year, he married Alaíde Cristina Barbosa Ulson.
In 1986, Orestes Quércia ran for governor of São Paulo. He won the election and became the governor. During his time as governor, São Paulo state experienced good economic growth. He also oversaw the privatization of VASP, an airline, in 1990. He then supported Luiz Antonio Fleury Filho, who became his successor.
Facing Challenges
Throughout his political career, Orestes Quércia faced some accusations. These were about possible wrongdoing during his time as mayor and governor. However, it is important to know that he was never found guilty of any of these accusations in court.
Later Elections
After leaving the government of São Paulo in 1991, Orestes Quércia ran for other important positions. He was a candidate for president of Brazil in 1994. He also ran for governor of São Paulo again in 1998 and 2006. In 2002, he ran for senator. He did not win any of these elections.
In 2010, he planned to run for the Senate again. However, he had to withdraw his candidacy. This was because he needed to focus on treating his prostate cancer.
Business Ventures
Besides his political work, Orestes Quércia was also a successful entrepreneur. He invested in properties and communication businesses. He owned the Sol Investment Group. This group included Nova Brazil FM Radio, the financial newspaper DCI, and two regional TV stations (TVB Campinas and TVB Santos). He also owned Shopping Jaragua and several farms. His assets were valued at over $117 million.
Passing Away
Orestes Quércia passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2010. He was 72 years old. The cause of his death was prostate cancer. He had battled this illness before in 1990, but it returned.
His funeral was held at the Bandeirantes Palace in São Paulo. He was buried on December 25 at the Morumbi Cemetery (Cemitério do Morumbi).
