College Basketball Journey
Orlando Phillips was born in San Francisco, California. He grew to be about 6 feet 7 inches (201 cm) tall. He became a star player for the Pepperdine University Waves college team. In 1983, he shared a special award, the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year award, with his teammate Dane Suttle. This showed how talented he was on the court.
Professional Basketball Career
After his college career, Orlando Phillips was chosen in the 1983 NBA draft. The Los Angeles Lakers picked him as the 69th player in the third round. However, he did not end up playing for the Lakers in the NBA. Instead, he started his professional career in other leagues.
Playing in Australia
In 1989, Orlando Phillips played for the Adelaide 36ers team in Australia's NBL. He had a bit of a slow start to the 1989 NBL season. This was because he was still getting better after breaking his foot.
Phillips wore the number "00" for the 36ers. At first, some people in Adelaide joked that "00" meant "Oh Oh" because of his slow start. But as the season went on, his performance really improved. His teammates felt he fit in well with the team.
Orlando Phillips played 25 games for the 36ers in 1989. Even with his early struggles, he played much better in the second half of the season. On average, he scored 20.5 points per game. He also grabbed 11 rebounds, made 1 assist, and had 1.2 steals per game. He played for about 31 minutes in each game.
Playing in Europe
Orlando Phillips also played basketball in Europe. He had a time playing in the Euroleague during the 1992–93 season. He played for a team called Pau Orthez.
For Pau Orthez, he played in 14 games. In these games, he averaged 12 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. His career ended in 1993.
