Orleans is a small place in Humboldt County, California. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the county.
This community was once known as New Orleans Bar and Orleans Bar. In the Karuk language, its name is Panamnik. Orleans is about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Weitchpec. It sits along State Route 96, which is also called the "Bigfoot Scenic Byway." The elevation of Orleans is 404 feet (123 meters) above sea level. The area uses the ZIP Code 95556 and the Area code 530. This area is part of the traditional lands of the Karuk Tribe of California.
History of Orleans
The place we now call Orleans was originally an Native American settlement named Panamnik. Later, when European-American miners came to the area, they started their own settlement. They first called it New Orleans Bar.
In 1855, the name was changed to Orleans Bar. This happened when it became the county seat of a county that no longer exists, called Klamath County, California. A county seat is like the main town or capital of a county, where the government offices are located. The Orleans post office, which handles mail, was officially opened on December 2, 1857.
Bigfoot Connection
Orleans is located about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of a famous spot. This spot is where the Patterson–Gimlin film was made. This film is well-known because it supposedly shows a Bigfoot, a large, ape-like creature that some people believe lives in the forests of North America.
Climate in Orleans
Orleans has a type of weather called a Hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This kind of climate usually has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. It's similar to the weather you might find in places around the Mediterranean Sea.
