Orocobix was an important chief, also known as a Cacique, of the Taíno people in Puerto Rico. He lived in the 16th century. His home was in the central mountain region, which the Taíno called Jatibonicu. This area included places like Aibonito, Orocovis, Barranquitas, Morovis, and Corozal today. The name Orocobix means 'Remembrance of the First Great Mountain' in the Taíno language.

Orocobix's Life and Family

Orocobix was a powerful leader among the Taíno. His main village and home, called a caney, was in the area known today as Aibonito. He was related to other important Taíno leaders.

Family Connections

Orocobix was the first cousin of another famous chief, Agüeybaná, who was known as "The Great Sun." Orocobix's wife was named "La Cacica" Yayo. They had a daughter named Cacica Catalina. Orocobix also had a younger brother, Cacique Oromico. Oromico was the chief of the Horomico region, which is now the town of Hormigueros.

Later Life

In 1514, Orocobix and his wife, Yayo, faced a difficult time. They were forced to work in the royal mines of the King of Spain in Utuado.

Where Did Orocobix Live?

In 1952, people who studied the land believed that Palo Hincado, a neighborhood in Barranquitas, might have been where Orocobix lived.
