The Orocrambus machaeristes is a special kind of moth. It belongs to a group of moths called Crambidae. This moth was first described by a scientist named Edward Meyrick in 1905.
This amazing moth is found only in New Zealand. When an animal or plant lives only in one specific place, we call it endemic. You can find this moth in the north-western Nelson area, and it stretches south along the Southern Alps all the way to Lake Wakatipu. It really loves to live in high mountain areas, which are called alpine habitats.
What Does It Look Like?
This moth is not very big. Its wingspan (the distance from one wingtip to the other) is usually between 19 and 25 millimeters. That's about the length of two small buttons side-by-side!
Its Wings
The front wings of the Orocrambus machaeristes moth are mostly grey. They have tiny speckles of white and dark brown, which helps them blend in with their surroundings. The back wings are a lighter color, a simple greyish white.
