History of Oroluk Island
The Oroluk Atoll was first found by a Spanish sailor named Alonso de Arellano. This happened in 1565. He was sailing on a ship called the San Lucas. He named the atoll Mira Cómo Vas, which means "Look how you're going" in Spanish.
Later, another Spanish naval officer, Felipe Tompson, visited the atoll. This was on April 7, 1773. He called it the Bajo Triste, meaning "Sad Shoal" in Spanish. He said it had a "horrible aspect." Tompson named Oroluk Island itself San Agustín.
