What is Orrs Springs?
Orrs Springs is an unincorporated community. This means it is a small area that does not have its own local government. Instead, it is part of the larger Mendocino County.
A Place of Natural Springs
The main feature of Orrs Springs is its natural hot springs. These springs bring warm water up from deep underground. People have visited these springs for a long time to relax and enjoy the warm water.
A Historic Stagecoach Stop
In the past, Orrs Springs was an important stop for stagecoaches. Stagecoaches were like old-fashioned buses that carried people and mail. They traveled between towns before cars and trains were common. This stop provided a place for travelers to rest and for horses to be changed.
The History of Orrs Springs
The name "Orrs Springs" comes from an early settler named Samuel Orr. His family played a big role in developing the area.
How the Name Came About
The place was first called "Orr's Hot Sulphur Springs." Later, it was shortened to "Orrs" and then "Orrs Springs." The name honors Samuel Orr, who was one of the first people to settle here.
The Orr Family's Legacy
Samuel Orr's son helped create a stage station and a resort at the springs. A stage station was a place where stagecoaches could stop. The resort offered lodging and services for visitors. Today, a resort called Orr Hot Springs Resort still exists there. It continues the tradition of welcoming visitors to the natural hot springs.
The Old Post Office
Orrs Springs even had its own post office for many years. The "Orrs" post office operated from 1889 to 1911. It then reopened from 1915 to 1933. This shows that the community was active and important during those times.
