Boonville is a small community in Mendocino County, California, United States. It used to be called The Corners and later Kendall's City. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area identified by the government for statistics. Boonville sits about 12.5 miles (20 km) southwest of Ukiah, at an elevation of 381 feet (116 meters). In 2020, about 1,018 people lived there.

History of Boonville

Boonville was started in 1862 by a person named John Bregartes. At first, it was called "The Corners". Bregartes built a hotel there.

In 1864, Alonzo Kendall built another hotel. Because of this, the town became known as "Kendall's City". Later, a man named W.W. Boone bought a store in town. He gave the place its current name, Boonville. The first post office opened in 1875.

Geography and Location

Boonville is located in the southern part of Mendocino County. It is in a beautiful area called the Anderson Valley. The town is about 115 miles (185 km) north of San Francisco.

State Route 128 goes right through Boonville. This road leads southeast to U.S. Route 101 at Cloverdale. It also goes northwest to the Pacific Ocean near Albion. Another road, State Route 253, goes east from Boonville to Route 101 near Ukiah.

Land and Water

The Boonville area covers about 5.5 square miles (14.2 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Anderson Creek flows through the town. This creek eventually joins the Navarro River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean.

Boonville is famous for something very unique: a special language called Boontling. This is a folk language that was made up in the area. If you see bottles from the local Anderson Valley Brewing Company, they often say "Bahl Hornin'". This means "It's good drinkin'" in Boontling!

The town hosts several fun festivals throughout the year:

  • In February, there's an Alsatian Varietals wine festival.
  • In spring, usually April or May, the annual Legendary Boonville Beer Festival takes place. It features beers from about 50 different craft breweries.
  • A Pinot Noir Festival is held in May.
  • In July, you can enjoy the Wool-growers' Barbecue and Sheepdog Trials.
  • Boonville also hosts the yearly Mendocino County Fair in September.
  • Every summer solstice weekend in June, the long-running Sierra Nevada World Music Festival happens here.

Local Traditions and Stories

Boonville is also known for the "Boonville stomp." This is a dance that was invented by a forestry worker named Maudie in the early 1900s. The musician Les Claypool even has a song called "Boonville Stomp" on his album Of Fungi and Foe.

The town has appeared in books and movies. The novel Boonville (2001) by Robert Mailer Anderson is set here. It's also mentioned in Sourdough (2017) by Robin Sloan. The 2008 science fiction action horror film Pig Hunt was set and filmed in Boonville. The 2016 Western film Boonville Redemption is also set in Boonville in the year 1906.
