Sport and Recreation in Osborne
Osborne has a rich history in sports, especially Australian rules football. The local football club has been a big part of the community for over a century!
The Osborne Football Club's Journey
The Osborne Football Club first started way back in 1900. It was known as the Napier South FC. The people living around Gum Holes Creek decided to form a team. They played their first social game against a team from Lockhart. This early team was often called "The Gumholes." The game took place on some cleared land near where the Uniting Church is today. Even though Napier South only scored one goal, they were proud of their effort against a more experienced team.
In 1915, the Gum Holes School changed its name to Osborne. So, when the football club started playing again in 1919 after World War One, it officially became the Osborne Football Club.
