Early Life and Hockey Start
Oskar Lindblom grew up in Gävle, Sweden. He looked up to hockey star Nicklas Bäckström, who was also from Gävle. Oskar's dad, Johan, played for several hockey teams in Sweden. This inspired Oskar and his two brothers, Marcus and Linus, to start playing hockey when they were young.
All three brothers began their hockey journey in the Brynäs IF junior system. Oskar became captain of the Brynäs under-16 team in the 2011–12 season. He was so good that he quickly moved up to the under-18 team. He also played in the TV-pucken tournament in 2011 and 2012. In his second year, he was an alternate captain and scored 20 points in just eight games. Before being drafted into the NHL, Oskar had 33 points in 43 games with Brynäs's top junior team, the J20 SuperElit.
Oskar's Professional Hockey Journey
Oskar Lindblom's professional career started with Brynäs IF. He played for their junior teams before joining their main professional team in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) for the 2014–15 season. The Philadelphia Flyers picked him in the fifth round of the 2014 NHL entry draft. In the 2016–17 season, Oskar was one of the top scorers in the SHL, with 47 points in 52 games. He was even named the Forward of the Year!
Playing for the Philadelphia Flyers
In May 2017, Oskar signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. He first played for their minor league team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, in the American Hockey League (AHL). He was even chosen for the 2018 AHL All-Star game!
Oskar made his NHL debut with the Flyers on February 21, 2018. He got his first NHL point in March and scored his first NHL goal the very next day. After the Flyers finished their season, Oskar went back to play for the Phantoms in their playoffs.
In December 2019, Oskar was diagnosed with a type of bone cancer. This meant he had to stop playing for the rest of the 2019–20 NHL season. But Oskar was incredibly strong! He finished his treatments in July 2020. After his brave fight, he was nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This award goes to the player who shows great sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
The Flyers signed Oskar to a new contract in July 2020. Amazingly, he returned to play in an NHL playoff game on September 3, 2020! In April 2021, the Flyers honored Oskar at their annual Hockey Fights Cancer game. Later that year, he won the Masterton Trophy, which was a huge moment for him and his fans.
After the 2021–22 season, the Flyers decided to end Oskar's contract early.
Time with the San Jose Sharks
In July 2022, Oskar Lindblom signed a two-year contract with the San Jose Sharks as a free agent. He played for the Sharks in the NHL.
Returning to Sweden
After his contract with the Sharks ended, Oskar decided to return to his home country. In May 2024, he signed a new contract to play for his original Swedish club, Brynäs IF. This team had just returned to the SHL, the top league in Sweden.
