Osmaniye (pronounced [osˈmaːnije]) is a city in southern Turkey. It's located on the eastern edge of the Çukurova plain. This city is the capital of Osmaniye Province and Osmaniye District. In 2022, about 252,186 people lived here.

The city sits near the Nur Mountains. Osmaniye was once on an old Silk Road route. This made it a very important place. It connected Anatolia (modern Turkey) with the Middle East.

Osmaniye is in a rich farming area. The Ceyhan river provides water for crops. Farmers here are well-known for growing peanuts. During the very hot summers, many people go to the Mediterranean coast. Others escape to the cooler Nur Mountains. A popular mountain spot is Zorkun, which is a yayla (a high pasture used as a summer retreat).

The city is also linked to Devlet Bahçeli. He is the leader of the MHP. He was a member of parliament for Osmaniye for many years.

A Look at Osmaniye's Past

Osmaniye has a long history. Many groups likely ruled here over time. These include the Hittites, Persians, Byzantines, and Armenians. However, there are no old buildings left from their time in the modern city.

The first Islamic presence came with the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid. His army included the first Turks to fight in Anatolia. They liked the area a lot. After the Turks won the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, more Turkish groups arrived. The Ulaşlı tribe of the Turkmens settled in the Nur Mountains.

The Ulaşlı tribe stayed powerful in the area. They were even involved in the Celali uprisings. These were rebellions against the Ottoman Empire in the 1600s. In 1865, an Ottoman general named Derviş Paşa came to bring order. He set up his base in nearby villages. He moved the Ulaşlı tribe from the mountains to a village called Hacıosmanlı. This area later became the province of Osmaniye. It was called Cebeli Bereket during the Ottoman period. After the Republic of Turkey was formed in 1923, it was renamed Osmaniye.

From 1924 to 1933, Osmaniye city was the capital of its own province. But in 1933, the province was closed. Osmaniye then became a district of Adana province. Later, in 1996, Osmaniye became Turkey's 80th province again. The city of Osmaniye became its capital once more. Since then, the city has received more money for new buildings and roads. It now feels more like a big city than a small market town.

Places to Visit in Osmaniye

Osmaniye itself has a few interesting spots. The city-centre Kent Müzesi (City Museum) is a good place to learn about the area. Osmaniye is also a good starting point for exploring nearby ancient sites. You can visit the old Roman city of Hierapolis-Castabala. It sits at the base of a rocky hill. On top of the hill, there's a castle. It was probably built by the Armenians long ago.
