About Osnaburg Township

Osnaburg Township is a part of Ohio that has its own local government. It's like a smaller area within a county, helping to manage local services and land. The township was officially organized on March 16, 1809, which means it has a long history!

Where is Osnaburg?

Osnaburg Township is found in the southeastern part of Stark County. It shares its borders with several other townships, like neighbors sharing fences.

  • To the north is Nimishillen Township.
  • To the east is Paris Township.
  • To the southeast, it borders Brown Township, which is in a different county called Carroll County.
  • To the south is Sandy Township.
  • The southwest corner touches Pike Township.
  • To the west is Canton Township.
  • The northwest corner meets Plain Township.

The small village of East Canton is also located within the northwestern part of Osnaburg Township.

How Osnaburg Got Its Name

The name "Osnaburg" comes from a city in Germany called Osnabrück. When the township was named, the German word -brück (which means "bridge") was changed to -burg (meaning "castle"). This was done to make the name easier to say in English and to avoid using the German letter "ü". Osnaburg Township is special because it's the only township with this name in all of Ohio!

A Look Back in Time

Life in Osnaburg Township was quite different in the early days. Back in 1833, the township was a busy place with several important businesses. It had:

  • One gristmill, which was used to grind grain into flour.
  • Seven sawmills, where wood was cut into lumber.
  • Two tanneries, which processed animal hides into leather.
  • Four stores, where people could buy goods.
  • One German and English book office, showing the mix of cultures in the area.

These businesses were very important for the people living there, helping them get food, build homes, and access supplies and information.
