The Otahu River is a cool river found on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. This area is part of the Waikato Region on the North Island. The river flows generally towards the northeast.
It starts from several smaller streams that come from the Coromandel Range mountains. The most important of these is the Wharekirauponga Stream. Finally, the Otahu River reaches the sea right next to the town of Whangamatā.
What's in a Name?
Have you ever wondered what "Otahu" means? The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage helps us understand. They say that Ōtahu means "place of Tahu." Tahu is a personal name, so it's like saying "Tahu's Place."
