Otakar Motejl (born September 10, 1932, in Prague; died May 9, 2010, in Brno) was an important Czech lawyer and politician. He became the very first Ombudsman of the Czech Republic in 2000. He held this job until he passed away in 2010. Before that, from 1998 to 2000, he was the Minister of Justice.

Early Life and Education

Becoming a Judge

From 1966 to 1968, Motejl worked at the Law Institute of the Ministry of Justice. This experience helped him move forward in his legal career. In 1968, he became a judge at the Supreme Court. This is one of the highest courts in a country.

Minister of Justice

From 1998 to 2000, Otakar Motejl served as the Minister of Justice. In this role, he was in charge of the country's legal system. He worked to make sure laws were fair and applied correctly.

The First Ombudsman

On December 18, 2000, Otakar Motejl was chosen for a very special role. He became the first Ombudsman of the Czech Republic. An ombudsman is like a public protector. Their job is to help citizens if they feel that government offices or officials have treated them unfairly. Motejl held this important position until his death in 2010.

Political Involvement

In 2006, Motejl was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic. This is like being a member of parliament. He was elected for a six-year term.
