Otis was founded in 1886. It was named after Otis Modderwell, the son of the person who started the town. The first post office in Otis opened in August 1887, helping the community grow.

Local Industry

Otis is home to an important industrial facility. The Linde Group, a company from Germany, runs one of the world's largest helium production plants here. This plant produces a lot of helium, about one-sixth of the world's total supply!

This helium is used for many things, including filling balloons for the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 2008 alone, the Otis facility sent nearly 400,000 cubic feet of helium for the parade.

Education in Otis

The community of Otis is served by the Otis–Bison USD 403 public school district. This district was formed when the schools in Otis and Bison joined together. Students in this district are known as the Otis-Bison Cougars.

Before the school unification, Otis had its own high school. The mascot for Otis High School was the Eagles.
