The Ottawa Lady Senators is a women's ice hockey organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This group helps organize many hockey teams for girls and women of different ages. Their Intermediate AA team plays in the Ontario Women's Hockey League (OWHL). A long time ago, their top senior team also played in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) until 2010. Before becoming the Lady Senators, the senior team was known as the Ottawa Capital Canucks and the Ottawa Raiders.
How the Team Started
The club began in 1998 as the National Capital Raiders. In 1999, they changed their name to the Ottawa Raiders. This team played in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). They played there from 1999 until 2007, when that league closed down.
In the 2007–08 season, the club changed its name again. They became the Ottawa Capital Canucks. This team then joined the CWHL. For that season, the team played their games at the Sandy Hill Arena in central Ottawa.
In 2008, the Canucks team joined forces with the Kanata Girls Hockey Association. This new, bigger organization was named the Ottawa Senators Women's Hockey Club. The Ottawa Senators NHL club even helped sponsor them! This new club had three different teams. The top Senior AAA team played in the CWHL. The Intermediate team played in the Provincial Women's Hockey League. There was also a Midget AA team that played in special tournaments. The new organization made its home at the Bell Sensplex in the Kanata area of Ottawa.
In 2010, the CWHL decided to have fewer teams. Because of this, the Senior AAA Ottawa Senators team was stopped. They no longer played in the CWHL. However, the Intermediate and other younger teams kept going. The Intermediate AA team is still a part of the Provincial Women's Hockey League today.
