Otter River State Forest is a fun outdoor place in Massachusetts. It's a public forest and a great spot for recreation. The forest is located in the towns of Templeton, Winchendon, and Royalston. It is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. This forest covers the land where the Otter River and Millers River meet. You can find different natural areas here, like freshwater marshes and pine tree groves. Some of these pine groves were planted a long time ago by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps. They helped reforest old farmlands.

History of Otter River State Forest

Otter River State Forest has an interesting history. It was the very first property bought by the State Forest Commission in 1915. The forest was officially opened in 1917. In August 2015, people celebrated the forest's 100th birthday right on its grounds!

The Civilian Conservation Corps' Role

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was very active in the forest during the 1930s. The CCC was a program that helped young men find work during the Great Depression. They built many things across the country. In Otter River State Forest, you can still see some of their work. They built the dam at the north end of Beaman Pond. They also built the visitor station on the east side of the pond. Sadly, a stone bathhouse they built near the pond is no longer there.
