History of Oud-Turnhout
The name "Oud-Turnhout" means "Old Turnhout." The village was first written about in the year 1333. The word "Oud" was added to tell it apart from another village. That other village grew up around a castle built in 1109 or 1110. This newer village eventually became the city of Turnhout.
For a long time, Oud-Turnhout was part of the bigger Turnhout municipality. However, the people of Oud-Turnhout felt that their needs were not being met. They felt ignored by their larger neighbor. Because of this, Oud-Turnhout became its own independent municipality in 1859.
Later, in 1977, some parts of Oud-Turnhout were moved to other towns. The small areas called Schoonbroek and Kinschot became part of Retie. The area known as Kijkverdriet joined Ravels. The rest of Oud-Turnhout stayed as it was.
Exploring The Liereman Nature Reserve
In the northern part of Oud-Turnhout, you can find "The Liereman." This is one of the largest nature reserves in Flanders, a region of Belgium. A nature reserve is a special protected area for plants and animals.
The Liereman covers more than 100 hectares, which is a very large space. It is a great place to explore nature and see different kinds of wildlife. It's a perfect spot for outdoor activities like walking and enjoying the environment.
