The Ouest Lausannois District is a special area, like a county, in the Vaud region of Switzerland. Its main town, or 'seat', is Renens. This district is home to many people and has a mix of nature and city areas.

Geography of Ouest Lausannois

The Ouest Lausannois District covers about 26.35 square kilometers (10.17 square miles). A big part of this land, about 24.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 13.6% of the district. Most of the land, around 61%, is developed with buildings and roads. Only a tiny bit, about 0.6%, is unproductive land.

People of Ouest Lausannois

The Ouest Lausannois District has a population of 79,015 people. In 2008, more babies were born than people passed away. Many people also moved into the district from other countries. This helped the population grow by about 2.6% in 2008.

The district has people of all ages. In 2009, about 11.2% of the population were children under 10 years old. Another 11.2% were teenagers between 10 and 19. Adults aged 20 to 59 made up a large part of the population, around 57.8%. Older adults, aged 60 and above, made up about 19.8% of the population.

History of the District

The Ouest Lausannois District was created on September 1, 2006. It was formed by combining parts of two older districts: the Lausanne district and the Morges district.

Politics in the District

In the 2007 national election, the most popular political party in Ouest Lausannois was the SP. They received about 24.07% of the votes. Other popular parties included the SVP, the Green Party, and the FDP. About 41.5% of the people who could vote actually did vote in that election.

Education in Ouest Lausannois

In the 2009/2010 school year, there were 7,940 students in the schools of Ouest Lausannois. The local government helps provide two years of optional pre-school for young children. During that year, 803 children attended pre-school.

The primary school program lasts for four years, and 4,339 students were in primary school. After that, students go to lower secondary school for six years. There were 3,341 students in these schools. A small number of students, 260, were homeschooled or went to other types of schools.
