Our Most Holy Redeemer is a beautiful church in Clerkenwell, London, England. It was built in the late 1800s by an architect named John Dando Sedding. This church is part of the Church of England and follows a style called Anglo-Catholicism. You can find it where Exmouth Market and Rosebery Avenue meet in the London Borough of Islington. The church, along with its attached clergy house, bell tower, and parish hall, is a very important historical building. It is known as a Grade II*-listed building, which means it's special and protected.

History of the Church Building

This church was built in 1888. It has an Italianate style, which means its design was inspired by buildings from Italy. The first plans were made by J. D. Sedding. After he passed away, his assistant, Henry Wilson, finished the work between 1892 and 1895.

The church was built on land where an old chapel, called Spa Fields Chapel, used to be. At first, only the main church building was constructed. The tall bell tower, called a campanile, and the clergy house (where the church leaders live) were added later in 1906.

On the outside of the original church, there is an inscription that says Christo Liberatori. This Latin phrase means 'To Christ The Redeemer'.

Inside the Church

The inside of the church is also very special. Its design, including the decorative canopy over the altar called a baldacchino, was inspired by a famous church in Florence, Italy, called Santo Spirito, Florence. A talented artist named F. W. Pomeroy created the beautiful carvings you can see inside the church.

The Church Today

The Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer is an active church. It follows the Traditional Catholic style within the Church of England. This means it has worship practices that are similar to those in the Roman Catholic Church. The church receives special guidance from the Bishop of Fulham, who is currently Jonathan Baker.
