Our Most Holy Redeemer is a beautiful church built in the late 1800s. You can find it in Clerkenwell, London, England. A famous architect named John Dando Sedding designed it. This church is part of the Church of England and follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition. It is located where Exmouth Market and Rosebery Avenue meet in Islington. The church, along with its attached clergy house, bell tower (called a campanile), and parish hall, is a special historic building. It is listed as Grade II*, meaning it's very important.

The Church's History and Design

This church was built in 1888. It has an Italianate style, which means its design was inspired by buildings from Italy. The original architect, J. D. Sedding, started the work. After he passed away, his assistant, Henry Wilson, finished the church between 1892 and 1895.

The church was built on land where an old chapel, called Spa Fields Chapel, used to be. At first, only the main church building was constructed. The tall bell tower and the clergy house (where the priests live) were added later in 1906. On the outside of the original church, you can see an inscription that says Christo Liberatori. This Latin phrase means 'To Christ The Redeemer'.

Inside the Church: Art and Architecture

The inside of Our Most Holy Redeemer church is truly special. Its design, including the baldacchino (a canopy over the altar), was inspired by a famous church in Florence, Italy, called Santo Spirito, Florence. This church was designed by a well-known architect named Brunelleschi.

The beautiful carvings you see inside the church were created by a sculptor named F. W. Pomeroy. These carvings add to the church's unique and detailed look.

Our Most Holy Redeemer Today

The Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer is an active church within the Church of England. It follows the Traditional Catholic style of worship. This means it has some traditions and practices that are similar to the Roman Catholic Church.

The church receives special guidance from the Bishop of Fulham, who is currently Jonathan Baker. This special guidance is called "alternative episcopal oversight." It helps ensure the church's traditions are supported.
