Ournie is a small rural community located in the far southeast part of the Riverina region in New South Wales, Australia. It's about 15 kilometers northwest of Welaregang and 20 kilometers south of Munderoo. Ournie is special because it sits right on the banks of Ournie Creek, which flows into the famous Murray River. The area is also very close to the border of Victoria, only about 4 kilometers away.

A Glimpse into Ournie's Past

Ournie has an interesting history, especially from the late 1800s.

The Gold Rush Era

For a while, Ournie was a busy place because of a small gold rush! In the late 1800s, many people came looking for gold. The population grew to over 400 people during this time. The town was centered around the gold mining area. Even today, you can still see the remains of the old mine shafts at that location. However, this site is now on private property.

Ournie Post Office

The Ournie Post Office has opened and closed a few times over the years.

  • It first opened on 1 July 1872.
  • It closed just a few years later in 1875.
  • The Post Office reopened in 1904.
  • It finally closed for good in 1968.
