Building and Opening

The Outremont Theatre was built in 1928. It was designed by an architect named René Charbonneau. The theatre officially opened its doors to the public the very next year, in 1929.

What the Theatre Was Used For

Over the years, the Outremont Theatre has been used for different kinds of entertainment. It has worked as a movie theatre, showing films to audiences. It has also been a popular concert hall, hosting many live music performances.

Many talented musicians have performed at the Outremont Theatre. Some of these include Pauline Julien, Louise Forestier, and Félix Leclerc. Other well-known artists like Diane Dufresne, Paul Piché, and Richard Séguin have also graced its stage. Even international stars like Tom Waits and The Beautiful South have performed here.

Closure and Reopening

In the early 1990s, the theatre closed down. However, the city of Outremont bought it in 1994. This was done to save and restore the theatre. It had been recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada just a year before. After a lot of renovation work, the theatre reopened on March 20, 2001.
