What Makes Overlander Falls Special?
Overlander Falls is a "block" type waterfall. This means the water drops over a wide section of the river. The falls are about 9 meters (30 feet) high. They are also quite wide, measuring up to 23 meters (75 feet) across.
The Fraser River is a very large river in British Columbia. It flows with a lot of power over these falls. This makes Overlander Falls a truly impressive sight to see.
The Story Behind the Name
The waterfall is named after a brave group of travelers called the "Overlanders." This expedition happened in 1862. About 175 men and one woman traveled a very long distance. They came all the way from Ontario, across the prairies and through the Rocky Mountains.
Their goal was to reach the goldfields near a town called Barkerville. They hoped to find gold and make their fortune. Just west of where Overlander Falls is today, the group faced a big decision.
About half of the group decided to continue down the Fraser River. They eventually reached Barkerville in late 1862. However, they were a bit too late. Most of the gold claims had already been taken. The other half of the group chose a different path. They rafted down the North Thompson River to Fort Kamloops. This journey was a huge adventure for everyone involved.
