The Ovide River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Rivière à l'Ours. This river is part of the larger Saguenay River system.
The Ovide River flows through different areas. These include the wild lands of Lac-Ashuapmushuan. It also passes through the towns of Sainte-Hedwidge and Saint-Prime. The river valley is mainly used for forestry. People also enjoy outdoor activities like tourism in the Zec de la Lièvre area.
During winter, the Ovide River usually freezes. This happens from early December to late March. However, some parts with fast-moving water might not freeze completely. It's generally safe to walk on the ice from mid-December to mid-March.
River's Journey
The Ovide River starts from a hidden lake. This lake is surrounded by marshy areas. It is located in the Zec de la Lièvre territory. The lake is about 303 meters (994 feet) above sea level.
From its start, the Ovide River flows for about 12.7 kilometers (7.9 miles). As it flows, the river drops about 125 meters (410 feet) in height. It mainly travels through thick forest areas.
The river flows southwest at first. Then it turns south. It passes through marshy lands. After that, it enters the area of Saint-Prime. It picks up water from small streams along the way. The river briefly enters Sainte-Hedwidge. Then it returns to Saint-Prime. It bends northeast and collects more water from another stream. Finally, it flows north and northwest until it reaches its end.
Where the River Ends
The Ovide River flows into the Rivière à l'Ours. This meeting point is near some rapids. From there, the water continues its journey.
- First, it flows north along the Rivière à l'Ours for about 16 kilometers (10 miles).
- Then, it joins the Ashuapmushuan River.
- Next, the water flows into Lac Saint-Jean. It crosses the entire lake.
- Finally, the water enters the Saguenay River. It travels about 172.3 kilometers (107 miles) east. The Saguenay River eventually meets the Saint Lawrence Estuary at Tadoussac.
