The Oxford Female Institute is a really old and important building in Oxford, Ohio. It's so special that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it's officially recognized for its history and is protected. This building used to be a school just for young women.

The Oxford Female Institute: A Historic School
The Oxford Female Institute opened its doors in 1850. It was connected to the Presbyterian Church, which is a type of Christian church. The very first leader of the school was a man named John Witherspoon Scott.
A Famous Student
One of the most famous students at the Oxford Female Institute was Caroline Scott. She was the second daughter of the school's first president, John Witherspoon Scott. After she graduated from the Institute, she married a man named Benjamin Harrison. Benjamin Harrison later became the President of the United States in 1888. Because of this, Caroline Scott became the First Lady, which is the title given to the wife of the President.
Becoming Part of Miami University
Over the years, the school changed its name a few times. It was later known as Oxford College and then Oxford College for Women. In 1928, another big change happened. Miami University, which is a larger university in Oxford, took over the school. All the students from Oxford College joined Miami University.
For more than sixty years, Miami University used the old Oxford Female Institute building as a place for women students to live. People often called the building "Ox College" during this time.
A Community Hub Today
In 2001, Miami University decided to let the building be used by the community. They leased it to the Oxford Community Arts Center. Now, this historic building is a busy place where people in Oxford can enjoy different arts and cultural activities. It's a great example of how an old building can find a new purpose and continue to be important to its town.
