Oxon Hill-Glassmanor was a special area used by the U.S. Census Bureau for counting people. It was called a census-designated place (CDP) in Prince George's County, Maryland, for the 1990 and 2000 censuses.

Even though it was counted as one area, most local people thought of Oxon Hill and Glassmanor as two separate communities. By the 2010 census, these areas were officially separated. Oxon Hill, National Harbor, and Glassmanor were then counted as their own individual CDPs.

History of Oxon Hill

Oxon Hill got its name from a large manor home built in the 1700s by Thomas Addison. This original home burned down in 1895. A new, grand Georgian-style house, also called "Oxon Hill Manor," was built in its place. This beautiful home is now owned by the public and offers amazing views of the river.

The community is divided by a major highway called the Capital Beltway (I-95/495). It is also close to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. This bridge used to have a lot of traffic, with about 300,000 vehicles crossing it every day. This caused big traffic jams in Oxon Hill. Things got better when a wider replacement bridge was finished in 2008. Many people who work in Northern Virginia choose to live in Prince George's County because housing can be more affordable there.

Oxon Hill has many different types of homes. You can find apartment buildings and single-family houses. Most of these homes were built between the 1940s and 1980s. The nearby town of Forest Heights is also part of this area. Years ago, many scientists from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory lived here, but not as many do today.

Oxon Hill has two main shopping centers: "Rivertowne" and the older "Eastover." These centers serve local residents and shoppers from nearby Southeast Washington. Eastover is located right at the border with Washington, D.C. It is a busy spot for many bus routes, some of which run 24 hours a day. There is also a Prince George's County Police station located there.
