Ozone is famous for the Ozone Falls State Natural Area. This special area was created in 1973 to protect Ozone Falls. This amazing waterfall drops 110 feet (about 33 meters) into a deep gorge.

Ozone is located at coordinates 35°52′55″N 84°48′33″W / 35.88194°N 84.80917°W / 35.88194; -84.80917. It sits high up on the Cumberland Plateau. This is a large, flat area of land that is much higher than the land around it.

Natural Features Around Ozone

Ozone is about five miles west of a steep edge called Walden Ridge. It is also five miles east of the Crab Orchard Mountains. A stream called Fall Creek flows through the western part of Ozone. This creek then plunges over Ozone Falls, creating a deep valley or gorge. This gorge forms the southern edge of the community.

Getting Around Ozone

Two important roads pass through Ozone. These are Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 70. These roads connect Ozone to bigger cities. You can travel east to Knoxville or west to Nashville.

A Look at Ozone's Past

The area where Ozone is today was once part of an old travel route. This route was used by stagecoaches in the late 1700s. Stagecoaches were like large horse-drawn buses that carried people and mail. This route connected Knoxville and Nashville.

Early Settlers and a New Name

Around 1806, a woman named Elijah Haley's widow opened a tavern in the Ozone area. A tavern was a place where travelers could eat, drink, and stay the night. A small community grew up around this tavern.

In 1880, a post office was set up here. The community was first named "Mammy" after a nearby creek. But in 1896, the people decided to change the name. They chose "Ozone" because the air quality in the area was very good. "Ozone" often refers to fresh, clean air.

Myles Horton and Education

Ozone is also important in the history of education. In 1927, a man named Myles Horton started his work as a popular educator here. He helped people in Ozone talk about their problems and find solutions together. This way of teaching and organizing helped him later create the famous Highlander School.
