A Pølsevogn (say "POUL-suh-vown") is a special hot dog stand from Denmark. The name means "sausage wagon." These stands sell delicious Danish hot dogs and sausages as street food. Some Pølsevogne can move around, like food trucks. Others are fixed in one spot, even though their name means "wagon." Each Pølsevogn has a small kitchen and a counter. A "pølsemand" (sausage-man) prepares and sells the food. Pølsevogne are very popular all over Denmark. Both Danes and visitors love them!

The Story of Pølsevogne

The very first Pølsevogne appeared in Copenhagen on January 18, 1921. There were six of them. These stands quickly became a big hit. In the 1960s and 1970s, there were over 700 Pølsevogne across Denmark. By 2021, about 100 Pølsevogne were still serving customers.

What Can You Eat at a Pølsevogn?

Pølsevogne are famous for their Danish hot dogs. They also sell many kinds of sausages, mostly pork. You can often find other Danish fast foods too. These include bøfsandwich (a type of burger) and fransk hotdog (a hot dog in a special bun). Pølse i svøb (sausage wrapped in bacon) is another popular choice.

Drinks and Toppings

You can buy drinks like chocolate milk, soft drinks, coffee, or even beer. The mustard served in Denmark is strong and not sweet. It is also less sour than mustard you might find elsewhere. Hot dogs and sausages come with ketchup, Danish remoulade (a creamy sauce), and a soft, sweet bun.

Regional Differences

Danish hot dogs can be a bit different depending on where you are. In most places, they are served with pickled cucumbers. But in other areas, you might get pickled red cabbage instead. Recently, some Pølsevogne have started offering Halal options. This shows how new cultures can add to old traditions. For example, a Halal Pølsevogn opened in Nørrebro, Copenhagen.

Pølsevogne Around the World

Danish-style hot dog stands are now popping up in many countries. There are about 130 Pølsevogne in Russia alone! You can also find them in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Some have even traveled as far as Singapore. Many of these stands are there because of Danish people living or visiting these countries.

Special Journeys

Some Pølsevogne have made amazing trips. One traveled across the United States to raise money for charity. Another made a 2213 km (about 1375 miles) trip from Copenhagen to Paris. This long journey was part of a friendly bet with a company that supplies hot dog buns.
