Pablo Gonzalvo y Pérez (born January 19, 1827, in Zaragoza; died November 18, 1896, in Madrid) was a Spanish painter. He was famous for his paintings of cities and buildings. He also painted detailed pictures of the inside of important buildings. These are sometimes called "interior portraits."

Pablo Gonzalvo's Life and Art

Pablo Gonzalvo started his art studies in his hometown of Zaragoza. Later, he moved to Madrid. There, he joined a very important art school called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. This was in 1845.

At this famous school, he learned from a well-known artist, Federico de Madrazo. Pablo Gonzalvo later became a member of this Academy himself. He also joined another art academy in Cádiz. There, he even became a professor, teaching art to others.

Traveling for Inspiration

To learn more and see the world, Pablo Gonzalvo traveled a lot. He visited many famous cities like Rome, Venice, Vienna, and Istanbul. These trips helped him get new ideas for his paintings. He often showed his art in exhibitions both in Spain and in other countries.

Important people, like the Dukes of Fernán Núñez and Infanta Isabella, Countess of Girgenti, supported his work. They helped him throughout his career.

Awards and Recognition

Pablo Gonzalvo won many awards for his art.

  • In 1856, he received an Honorable Mention at the first National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Spain). This was a big art show in Spain.
  • He won a Third Class prize in 1858.
  • He then won First Class prizes in 1860, 1862, and 1864.

After winning two First Class prizes, he could not win another. So, his 1864 prize was changed to a special honor. He received the Cross of the Order of Charles III. This was a very important award from the Spanish king. In 1867, he entered the exhibition again. He was given an even higher rank in the Order of Charles III.

International Exhibitions

Pablo Gonzalvo also showed his paintings around the world.

  • He sent his art to the 1862 International Exhibition in London.
  • He participated in the Franco-Spanish Exposition in Bayonne in 1864.
  • At the Exposition Universelle (1867) in Paris, he won a Third Class medal.
  • His art was also shown at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair.
  • He even exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.

He was a close friend of José Martí, a famous poet. José Martí even called him "the good friend" in his poems.

Besides the Order of Charles III, Pablo Gonzalvo received another important award. He was given a special honor in the Order of Isabella the Catholic. This was because of his many successes at the National Exhibition. In 1872, he received the Cross in the Civil Order of María Victoria [es]. This award came from the government and the Royal Academy.
