About Pablo Longueira

Early Life and Education

Juan Pablo Longueira began his political journey in 1981. He was chosen to lead FECECh, a student organization at the University of Chile. This group was created to offer a different voice from the main student federation at the time.

His first important speech at the university was written by his mentor, Jaime Guzmán. In 1986, he took part in a protest against US Senator Ted Kennedy during his visit to Chile.

Political Career Highlights

Longueira has held several important roles in Chilean politics. He was a Deputy for many years, representing different districts. Deputies are like representatives who work in the lower house of the Chilean parliament.

Later, he became a Senator, serving in the upper house. Senators help create and approve laws for the country. His experience as both a Deputy and a Senator gave him a lot of knowledge about how the government works.

In 2011, he was appointed as the Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism. In this role, he was in charge of helping Chile's economy grow and supporting tourism. He worked to create jobs and improve the country's financial health.

Presidential Candidacy

In 2007, Longueira announced he wanted to run for President in the 2009 election. However, he later decided not to continue his campaign.

In 2013, he was again chosen by his party, UDI, to be their candidate for the presidential election. He won the primary election against another candidate, Andrés Allamand, becoming the main candidate for the right-wing group. However, he later withdrew from the race due to personal health reasons.

Return to Politics

After several years away, Longueira announced his return to politics in 2020. He expressed interest in leading the UDI party. On January 6, 2021, he decided to leave the UDI party, where he had been a member for a long time.

He wanted to run as an independent candidate for the Constitutional Convention. This convention was formed to write a new constitution for Chile. However, he was not able to get the necessary support to register his candidacy.
