Juan Pablo Longueira Montes (born August 12, 1958) is a Chilean politician and civil engineer. He served as the Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism of Chile from 2011 to 2013.
He was one of the people who helped start the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) political party. He was very close to Jaime Guzmán, another important figure in the party. Within the UDI, he was known for his focus on helping people in poorer areas. During the 1980s, he gained a reputation for working directly with people living in shanty towns.
Before becoming a minister, Longueira was a Senator. President Sebastián Piñera then chose him to join his group of ministers. He also served as a Deputy from 1990 until 2006. After stepping away from politics in 2013, he announced his return in 2020.
Biography
Early Life and Education
Juan Pablo Longueira began his political journey in 1981. He was chosen to lead the FECECh. This group aimed to replace the main student federation at the University of Chile, which was against the government at the time. His first speech at the university was written by his mentor, Jaime Guzmán. In 1986, he led a protest against US senator Ted Kennedy during his visit to Chile.
Political Career Highlights
On March 30, 2007, Longueira announced he would run for President in the 2009 presidential election. However, he later decided not to continue his campaign on May 3.
On April 29, 2013, his party, the UDI, chose him as their candidate for the 2013 presidential election. He took the place of another candidate, Laurence Golborne. On June 30, 2013, Longueira won the primary election for the right-wing group called Alianza por Chile. He received 51.37% of the votes, beating Andrés Allamand. This made him the only candidate for the group in the 2013 presidential election. However, on July 17, 2013, Longueira suddenly withdrew from the election. He stated that he had personal health problems.
Seven years after leaving politics, in 2020, Longueira announced he would return. He wanted to run for the presidency of the UDI party. On January 6, 2021, Longueira gave up his lifelong membership in the UDI. He planned to run as an independent candidate in the Constitutional Convention election. However, he could not get the support needed from the UDI's leader to register his candidacy. Longueira believed this was a political move by the UDI's leadership. Some experts say that Longueira leaving the party shows a change in the leadership of the UDI's original founders.
