Patrick Gerard Barnes (born 9 April 1987) is an Irish former boxer. He competed as an amateur from 2005 to 2016. Later, he became a professional boxer from 2016 to 2019.
As an amateur, he boxed in the light-flyweight division. He proudly represented Ireland at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics. He won bronze medals in Beijing and London. He also represented Northern Ireland at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games. He won a gold medal at both events. As a professional, he fought for the WBC flyweight title in 2018.

Early Life and Boxing Start
Patrick Barnes started boxing when he was 11 years old. He joined the East Coast Boxing club. When he was 16, he moved to Holy Family ABC in Belfast.
Amateur Boxing Career Highlights
2007: European Union and World Championships
In 2007, Barnes competed at the EU Championships in Dublin. He had to leave the competition because of an eye injury.
Later that year, he went to the World Championships in Chicago. He reached the quarter-finals but lost to China's Zou Shiming. Even though he didn't win a medal, reaching the quarter-finals helped him qualify for the 2008 Olympics.
2008: Olympic Medal Success
In 2008, Barnes won a silver medal at the EU Championships in Poland. This secured his spot at the Summer Olympics.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Barnes won Ireland's first medal. He earned a bronze medal in the light flyweight division. He lost to Zou Shiming in the semi-final.
2010: European and Commonwealth Gold
On 12 June 2010, Barnes won a gold medal at the 2010 European Amateur Boxing Championships. He beat Elvin Mamishzade from Azerbaijan.
Later in 2010, Barnes represented Northern Ireland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He won another gold medal, defeating Jafet Uutoni from Namibia in the final.
2012: Second Olympic Medal
At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Barnes made history. He became the first Irish boxer to win medals at two Olympics in a row. He won another bronze medal in the light flyweight division. He again faced Zou Shiming in the semi-final and lost in a very close match.
2014: Commonwealth Games Champion Again
As the captain of the Northern Ireland boxing team in 2014, Barnes led by example. He won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He defeated India's Devendro Singh. This was special because he was the first Northern Irish boxer to win two Commonwealth titles in a row.
After his success, Barnes received an honour, the MBE, in 2015. This was for his contributions to boxing and the community in Northern Ireland.
2015: World Series of Boxing
Barnes competed in the WSB during the 2014–2015 season. He joined the Italia Thunder team. He had a great season, winning five of his six fights. Most of his wins were by unanimous decision.
2016: Final Olympic Appearance
Barnes had the honour of carrying the Flag of Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He said it was an "incredible honour." In the 2016 Olympics, he was defeated in the round of 16 by Samuel Carmona.

Barnes won the All-Ireland title in 2007 and 2008.
Professional Boxing Career
First Professional Fights
After his successful amateur career, Barnes became a professional boxer. He made his debut on 5 November 2016. He won his first fight by disqualification.
Challenging for a World Title
On 18 August 2018, Barnes fought Cristofer Rosales for the WBC world flyweight title. Barnes started strong, but Rosales won the fight by knockout in the fourth round.
Retirement from Boxing
On 11 October 2019, Barnes faced Jay Harris. Barnes was knocked down in the third and fourth rounds. He lost the fight by knockout. In November 2019, Patrick Barnes announced he was retiring from professional boxing.
Personal Life
Patrick Barnes married Mari Burns in July 2017. They have two daughters. Barnes is also an Irish speaker. He received a Silver Fáinne in 2019, which is an award for speaking Irish.
