The World's Smallest Frog
Paedophryne amauensis is a type of frog that was found not too long ago in Papua New Guinea. It is only about 7.7 millimetres (0.30 in) long. That's smaller than a dime! This makes it the smallest known vertebrate on Earth.
How This Tiny Frog Was Found
This amazing frog was discovered in August 2009. A scientist named Christopher Austin found it while exploring the forests of Papua New Guinea. His trip was supported by the National Science Foundation.
Amazing Facts About This Frog
The Paedophryne amauensis frog is even smaller than the animal that held the record before it. That was a type of carp fish from Indonesia. This tiny frog mostly lives on land. What's really cool is that its life cycle does not include a tadpole stage. Instead, tiny froglets hatch directly from the eggs!
