Shields is a community located in Saginaw County, Michigan, in the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own city government like a town or city.

Shields is also a census-designated place (CDP). This is a special area defined by the government just for counting people. In 2020, about 7,035 people lived in the Shields CDP.

The community is found along M-46, also called Gratiot Road. It's located just west of the Tittabawassee River. Most of Shields is in Thomas Township, with a small part extending into James Township.

History of Shields

A post office served the Shields area from 1894 to 1902. The community is named after two brothers, William and Arthur Shields. They were born in Ireland in 1826 and 1830.

The Shields brothers moved to Michigan with their family in 1842. They settled in Thomas Township. They owned a large piece of land, about 160 acres (0.65 square kilometers). Over time, the area where they lived became known as the Shields area.

Paines: A Nearby Community

Paines is another small place located within James Township, near Shields. It's found on Dutch Road. Paines was first settled in 1871. It was named after A. B. Paine, who made bricks in the area.

Paines was an important stop for trains. It was where the Michigan Central and Pere Marquette train lines met. A post office called "Painesville" opened there in 1873. It later changed its name to "Paines" in 1880 and stayed open until 1904.

Shields is located in a part of Michigan with both land and water. According to the United States Census Bureau, the total area of the Shields CDP is about 6.6 square miles (17.1 square kilometers).

Most of this area, about 6.5 square miles (16.8 square kilometers), is land. A smaller part, about 0.1 square miles (0.26 square kilometers), is water. This water area makes up about 1.06% of the total area.
