A Look Back: Painesdale's History
Painesdale was built a long time ago, between 1899 and 1917. A company called the Champion Mining Company created it. They named the community after a businessman from Boston, William A. Paine. He was involved with many mines.
The company built Painesdale right next to where they found copper. They planned the town carefully. They wanted it to be a very efficient place to live and work.
In 1993, Painesdale became a special place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means the whole area, including its streets and the old Champion Mine, is important for history.
What Painesdale Looks Like
In Painesdale, you can see rows of houses that look very similar. These were built for the workers. There are also larger, unique houses that were for the managers.
You can still find a single shaft house from the Champion Mine. It's in the lower part of the community. Other big mine buildings are also still standing around it.
