Palacio Salvo (which means Salvo Palace) is a famous building in Montevideo, Uruguay. It stands tall at the corner of 18 de Julio Avenue and Plaza Independencia. An Italian architect named Mario Palanti designed it. He also designed a similar building called Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
When it was finished in 1928, Palacio Salvo was about 100 meters (328 feet) tall. For a short time, it was the tallest building in Latin America.

Discovering Palacio Salvo's History
The land for Palacio Salvo was bought by the Salvo brothers. They paid 650,000 Uruguayan pesos for it. The building stands where a famous cafe called Confiteria La Giralda used to be.
This cafe was special because it's where Gerardo Matos Rodríguez wrote his famous tango song, La Cumparsita, in 1917. Today, the Tango Museum of Montevideo is inside Palacio Salvo. It shares the history of La Cumparsita and Uruguayan Tango.
Original Plans and Changes
The first plans for the building were very detailed. They even described a powerful lighthouse at the very top. This lighthouse was supposed to be made in Italy. It would have a large mirror and a strong lamp. The light could reach about 100 kilometers (62 miles) away!
However, the lighthouse was never built. Instead, a set of antennas was placed there. The building was first meant to be a hotel. But this plan didn't work out. Now, it has many offices and private homes inside.
The main part of the building is 95 meters (312 feet) tall. With the antennas, its total height was 100 meters (328 feet). The antennas were taken down permanently in November 2012.
Fun Facts About Palacio Salvo
- The song "The Tower of Montevideo" was inspired by this building. It is on Damon Albarn's 2021 album, The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows.
