Palcaraju is a majestic mountain located in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. This range is part of the mighty Andes mountains in Peru. Palcaraju stands tall in the Ancash area of Peru.

The name Palcaraju comes from the Quechua language. Pallqa means "forked" or "branched." Rahu means "snow" or "ice," often referring to a snow-capped mountain. So, Palcaraju means something like "forked snowy mountain."

About Palcaraju

Palcaraju is a very high mountain, reaching an elevation of 6,274 metres (20,584 ft) at its main summit. Mountains over 6,000 meters (about 20,000 feet) are often called "six-thousanders."

Palcaraju's Peaks

Palcaraju isn't just one single peak. It actually has three main peaks that make up the mountain:

  • Palcaraju: This is the highest peak, standing at 6,274 metres (20,584 ft).
  • Palcaraju Oeste: This peak is a bit lower, reaching 6,110 metres (20,046 ft). "Oeste" means "West" in Spanish.
  • Palcaraju Sur: This peak also reaches 6,274 metres (20,584 ft). "Sur" means "South" in Spanish.

Location in the Andes

Palcaraju is part of the Cordillera Blanca, which is a stunning part of the Andes mountain range. The Andes stretch along the western side of South America. The Cordillera Blanca is known for its many high peaks and beautiful glaciers.
