Palmas is a small community, also known as a barrio, located in the municipality of Salinas, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 313 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.
History of Palmas
The history of Palmas is connected to the wider history of Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of Palmas and a nearby community called Quebrada Yeguas was 981 people.
