Palo Verde is a small community in Maricopa County, Arizona, in the United States. It is called an "unincorporated area." This means it is not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it is part of the larger county.

Palo Verde is located about 40 miles (64 km) west of Phoenix. It is also about 6 miles (9.7 km) southwest of downtown Buckeye. You can find it along Historic U.S. Route 80.

Palo Verde's Early Days

The Palo Verde area began to be settled in 1886. A man named John G. Roberts and his family were among the first to live there. Mr. Roberts was an important person in the community's early history.

He helped build important water systems like the Arizona and Buckeye canals. These canals were very important for farming in the desert. John G. Roberts also worked as a cattle inspector and a deputy sheriff in Buckeye.

The Palo Verde Baptist Church

One of the very first buildings constructed in Palo Verde was the Palo Verde Baptist Church. It was built in 1890 and is still standing today. This church has been a part of the community for a very long time.

Palo Verde Nuclear Station

Even though it shares the same name, the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is not actually in Palo Verde. It is located in a nearby place called Wintersburg. This power plant is a very large facility that creates electricity.

Community Life in Palo Verde

Palo Verde is a "county island." This means it is a small area within the planning boundaries of the nearby town of Buckeye. Because it is a county island, Palo Verde cannot become its own official town. However, it could possibly become part of Buckeye in the future. This process is called annexation.
