Pālolo is a beautiful valley, a stream, and a neighborhood located in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the United States. It's about four miles east of downtown Honolulu and less than a mile from Diamond Head. Pālolo is unique because it covers an entire valley, from the mountains to the ocean.

The word pālolo means "clay" in the Hawaiian language.

Exploring Pālolo Valley

Pālolo Valley is a long, narrow area that stretches from the mountains down towards the ocean. The part of the valley closer to the mountains, called mauka, is used for farming. The part closer to the ocean, called makai, is where most people live in single-family homes.

Natural Features and Landmarks

Pālolo is home to some interesting natural spots.

  • Kaʻau Crater: This is an extinct volcano found in the mountains at the back of the valley. An extinct volcano means it's no longer active.
  • Pālolo Stream: A stream runs through the valley. It eventually joins with the Mānoa stream to form the Mānoa-Pālolo drainage canal. This canal then flows into the Ala Wai Canal, which is a well-known waterway in Honolulu.

Pālolo's Neighbors

Pālolo Valley has several neighbors.

  • To the mountain side (mauka), it's bordered by the Koʻolau Range.
  • To the east, towards Koko Head, you'll find Wilhelmina Rise.
  • To the ocean side (makai), Pālolo meets the Kaimuki neighborhood.
  • To the west, towards ʻEwa, it's next to Waʻahila Ridge.

Education in Pālolo

Pālolo is home to two schools that serve the local community.

  • Jarrett Middle School
  • Pālolo Elementary School

These schools help educate the children and young people living in the valley.

Local Government and Community

Pālolo is part of the larger city of Honolulu, but it also has its own local representatives.

How Pālolo is Governed

The neighborhood is part of Honolulu County. The main leader for the entire city is the Mayor, currently Rick Blangiardi. There's also the Honolulu City Council, which helps make decisions for the city.

Pālolo Neighborhood Board

Pālolo has its own Pālolo Neighborhood Board. This board is made up of local residents who volunteer their time. They work to represent the community's interests and help with local issues. They are an important way for people in Pālolo to have a say in what happens in their area.
