Discovering Paloma's Past

Paloma has a rich history, especially linked to California's famous Gold Rush. Before it was called Paloma, it had other names like Fosteria and Frenchman's Ranch.

A Golden Past

In 1849, people started looking for gold in areas around Paloma, including Gwin Mine and Lower Rich Gulch. They found gold in the streams and rivers, which is called "placer gold."

The Gwin Mine Story

Later, in 1851, a new type of gold was found in the area. This was "quartz gold," which means it was found within rocks. A very important person named William M. Gwin bought land here in 1851. He was California's very first U.S. Senator, a leader who represented California in the national government.

The Gwin Mine became super successful, producing millions of dollars worth of gold over the years. However, all good things come to an end, and the Gwin Mine finally closed its operations in 1908.

Paloma's Place in History

Today, Paloma is recognized as an important historical site. It is officially registered as California Historical Landmark #295. This means it's a special place that helps us remember California's past.

The town also had its own post office for a while. It operated from 1903 to 1918. During this time, the town was known as Fosteria, named after the Foster family, who were early settlers in the area.
