The Palouse Mall is a popular shopping mall located in Moscow, Idaho, in the western part of the United States. It first opened its doors in 1976. Today, you can find many well-known stores here, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Michael's, Old Navy, Rite Aid, Ross Stores, and WinCo Foods.
The mall is on the western side of Moscow, very close to the border with Washington. It sits along Pullman Road, which is also State Highway 8. This road turns into State Route 270 when you cross into Washington. It connects Moscow to Pullman, another important city in the Palouse region, about 7 miles (11 km) away.
A Look Back: Mall History
The land for the Palouse Mall started being prepared in October 1974. The very first stores opened in 1976. These included Kmart, Rosauers, and Pay 'n Save (which is now Rite Aid). The idea for the mall had been around since 1964. The land it was built on was rented from the University of Idaho.
The main indoor part of the mall officially opened in October 1976. It featured big department stores like J. C. Penney and The Bon Marché (which later became Macy's). Another store called Lamonts opened the following August.
Changes Over the Years
Through the 1990s and early 2000s, the mall saw many changes to its main stores.
- In 1990, Rosauers changed to Excell Foods, but it closed by 1992. Then it became Price Connection, which closed in 1995.
- After Kmart closed in 1995, its space got bigger and turned into Waremart. This store is now known as WinCo Foods.
- In 1997, the mall itself got a big makeover and had a grand re-opening in November. This is when it dropped "Empire" from its name, becoming simply "Palouse Mall."
- The J. C. Penney store closed in 1998. That same year, Troutman's Emporium took its place.
More Recent Changes
An area outside the main mall, which used to be Ernst Home Centers, became Office Depot and Hastings Entertainment in 1999. In 2000, Gottschalks bought the Lamonts store chain.
- Troutman's closed down in 2003. Two years later, Ross Stores opened in that spot.
- Gottschalks closed in January 2007. Its building was torn down to make way for Bed Bath & Beyond and Old Navy.
- Macy's closed its doors in April 2016.
- Also in 2016, the Office Depot space became Staples. Hastings Entertainment went out of business that year.
- In 2017, Marshalls opened in the old Hastings Entertainment spot.
Just west of the mall, a Walmart store opened in late 1992. It closed in 2010 when Walmart opened a new store in Pullman. However, it reopened in early 2012.
