About Paper Heart Gallery
The Paper Heart Gallery was a unique venue. It was known for being a place where everyone, no matter their age, could come and enjoy different types of art and entertainment. It was a music venue, an art gallery, and a space for many kinds of performances.
How Paper Heart Began
Scott Sanders was the owner and operator of The Paper Heart. He first started it as a website in the year 2000. The website was a way to show off artists' work and help them sell it.
In 2001, Sanders opened a physical gallery in downtown Phoenix. This first location was at 5th Avenue and Van Buren Street. The Paper Heart not only showed art, but it also hosted many fun events. These included poetry readings, spoken word events, stand-up comedy shows, improv performances, and other performance art. It also had concerts for local bands and groups touring from other places.
For a while, a coffee bar called The Paper Cup was run inside the gallery. This was managed by JRC and Stephanie Carrico.
Moving to a New Home
In 2004, The Paper Heart Gallery moved to a new and bigger location. This new spot had more space for art exhibits, a larger area for performances, and even studios where artists could work.
After JRC and Stephanie Carrico left to open their own place called Trunk Space, Scott Sanders added a bar inside The Paper Heart Gallery.
Fun Events Held Here
The Paper Heart Gallery was a popular stop during the city's First Friday Art Walk program. This is an event where people can walk around and visit different art spots in the city.
The gallery also hosted many regular events:
- Shizz Second Saturdays: A music event put on by a website called The Shizz.
- PAINT: A weekly event for poetry and spoken word.
- B-movie night: A monthly night to watch fun, old movies.
- Modest Proposal Presents: A monthly stand-up comedy and sketch comedy show hosted by a comedy duo.
- Galapagos: A monthly performance by an improv group.
The Paper Heart Gallery was even featured in local newspapers like the Phoenix New Times and the Arizona Republic.
Why Paper Heart Closed
In October 2006, it was announced that The Paper Heart Gallery would close. This was due to money problems. Even though there were several benefit shows to help keep it open longer, the gallery eventually had to close.
The very last art exhibit at The Paper Heart Gallery was held on December 7, 2007. The final performance at the venue happened on December 29, 2007.
