Exploring the History of Paradise
How Paradise Got Its Name
The story of Paradise began in 1832. The U.S. Government gave about 40 acres of land in this area to a person named Mr. Pleasant Gentry. Later, in 1850, the land was sold to John Gosney. He helped plan out the area, and the growing settlement was first called "Gosneyville."
Around 1884, Gosneyville was renamed "Paradise." This new name was chosen because the community had many churches for its small size. People thought it was a peaceful, "paradise-like" place.
Early Services in Paradise
A post office opened in Paradise in 1858. This allowed people in the community to send and receive mail. The post office served the area for many years, until it closed down in 1907.
