A Look Back in Time

This park is famous because of important agreements made here. In October 1826, leaders from the Potawatomi and Miami Native American tribes met with representatives from the United States government.

The Treaties of 1826

During this meeting, several treaties were signed. A very important one was the Treaty of Mississinewa. In these treaties, the Native American tribes agreed to give up large areas of their land. This land was located north of the Wabash River.

Why the Treaties Were Signed

The United States government wanted this land for a few reasons. They planned for more settlers to move into the area. The treaties also made way for important projects. These included building a canal and creating the Michigan Road. These projects were important for travel and trade in the early 1800s.
