What is Parkdale?
Parkdale is a residential area where many people live. It was first developed in the 1970s. When it was built, the people who created it hoped it would become a new suburb. However, the Upper Hutt City Council did not agree. They decided that Parkdale would be part of the existing suburb of Birchville.
Official Name
The New Zealand Geographic Board also confirmed this decision. In 1982, they stated that Birchville was the official name for the area. This means that Parkdale is officially a part of Birchville. Most people who live there also refer to it as Birchville.
Streets of Parkdale
The main road in Parkdale is called Gemstone Drive. This street runs from west to east. It starts at Akatarawa Road and goes to Topaz Street. Topaz Street then connects to State Highway 2, a major road.
Gemstone Names
Many other streets in Parkdale are cul-de-sacs. A cul-de-sac is a street that is closed at one end. This means it has only one way in and out. The streets are named after different gemstones. They are listed in alphabetical order from Akatarawa Road. For example, you can find Amber Grove and Moonstone Grove.
Community Life
Parkdale is a quiet residential area. It is a place where families live and grow. There is a Jehovah's Witnesses church located at the eastern end of the neighborhood. This church serves as a community gathering place.
